South Africa has seen an increase in removals in the last 12 months. This has been brought on with A higher number of South African nationals returning to the country and the countries raised profile with the impending 2010 Football World Cup taking place there in June 2010.

All private shipments of personal household goods will require a customs form DA 304 and a P.1.160. Form. Original passport with the date of entry into South Africa will need to be presented . Permanent or temporary Permits, residence or work Visas will also be required. Additional shipping paperwork will be provided / completed by your selected removal company, these include an inventory of effects and an Ocean Bill of Lading.

Returning residence must have been out of the country for at continuous period of at least 6 months prior to the move back.

The shipper will have to be in South Africa prior to arrival of the shipment to complete customs clearance, if you are not in South Africa at this time your container could be refused customs clearance which could also result in additional costs and delays.

A Port Wharfage or Cargo dues charge will need to be paid in South Africa on all household goods imported shipments.

Normal household goods over 12 months old will be allowed entry duty free.

Certain items will always attract customs duty and/or tax and these include:

Motor vehicles into South Africa can be brought in duty free but you will require an Import Permit and Letter of Authority before shipment, ownership and possession of the vehicle abroad for at least 1 year before shipment and the vehicle cannot be sold or disposed of for at least 2 years after importation. Left hand drive cars are NOT permitted into South Africa if purchased after 1st January 2000.
